Accomodation

Accommodation

In the city:

There are "guesthouses" in most villages. It costs between 50 and 150 rps per night for a decent dormitory; 150 to 500 rps for a single or double room with bathroom. In Gilgit, Skardu, Chitral and Karimabad, there are many luxurious hotels, up to a hundred dollars a night. All along the Karakoram Highway, there are good possibilities for accommodation, as well as in Chitral and Skardu

Islamabad is the most expensive city, between 800 and 2000 rps a night for a room. Rawalpindi is more popular, it has double rooms around 500 rps a night.

Small holes!

During our stay in 2006 we met Louis, a Frenchman living in India. He told us how Indian people were used to make holes in doors or walls to see their clients in privacy.
We had the joy of experimenting small holes returning to Islamabad. In many hotels doubtfully luxurious, they are used to drill the doors for installing peepholes. Sometimes there is just a piece of paper.

This was the case in this hotel. The morning I found the piece of paper on the ground and realized that I could see without any problem inside the room. I carefully sealed it with tape. Coming back to the hotel, my craft was forced from outside and you could see inside again. I put in the current management, we changed room and there were no worries.

In 2007, a new hotel in Islamabad and the same problem! Our room had a hole filled with paper. Taking the bull by the horns, I warned the direction that I already had this kind of inconvenience. They told me for sure this was not the case in their establishment and set up a peephole. In the morning, while I was working on my laptop, I heard small acute and diffuse sounds. 10 minutes later I suddenly realized that they came from the door. I approach slowly, and opened the door at once. On the other side, nobody, and the peephole almost totally unscrewed!

This kind of experience is fortunately not everyday, but happens regularly when you travel to Pakistan or India. Be vigilant, without lapsing into paranoia.

In treks : There is no guesthouse on the journey that I have described. The tent is strongly recommended, you can find shelters for porters, inquire depending on the route.
